PSHE

At The Haven, PSHE plays an important role in helping our pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to manage life both in and beyond school. Our PSHE curriculum is designed to be relevant to the needs and experiences of our pupils, supporting their emotional wellbeing, independence, relationships and preparation for adulthood.

Pupils have a dedicated weekly PSHE lesson, with learning tailored to their age and stage. Topics include health and wellbeing, emotional regulation, managing stress and anxiety, positive self-esteem, relationships, staying safe, first aid and preparing for life in the wider world. At Key Stage 4, pupils also develop their understanding of areas such as online safety, artificial intelligence, rights and wellbeing, while Key Stage 5 focuses increasingly on independence, mental health, seeking appropriate support and managing the challenges of adult life.

PSHE is not confined to a single lesson, however. It is woven throughout school life, with opportunities for pupils to develop these skills through assemblies, form time, social times, Key Worker sessions and across the wider curriculum. For example, pupils may develop financial awareness through budgeting in Maths, explore different viewpoints through English, or learn about cultures and communities through Geography. Current affairs and significant events in religious and cultural calendars also provide opportunities for discussion and reflection.

Our aim is for pupils to leave The Haven with greater self-awareness, resilience, confidence and independence, equipped with the practical knowledge and skills they need to make positive choices, navigate challenges and participate successfully in their communities and adult lives.
