Science at The Haven
At The Haven, our science curriculum is carefully designed to meet the individual needs of our students, providing an accessible, engaging and supportive learning experience. We recognise that many of our learners face additional barriers to learning, so our approach combines high expectations with flexibility, personalised teaching and opportunities for practical exploration.
Curriculum Pathways and Qualifications
We offer both Entry Level Certificate (ELC) Science and GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics, allowing students to follow a pathway that reflects their individual needs, prior learning and readiness for formal qualifications.
Rather than following a traditional Combined Science pathway, our GCSE students study individual Science subjects. This approach helps to reduce cognitive load, allowing students to focus on one scientific discipline at a time, develop a secure understanding of key concepts and build confidence without becoming overwhelmed by the breadth of content. Students following a GCSE pathway also can achieve two separate Science GCSE qualifications during their time at The Haven.
Our GCSE courses are typically delivered over one academic year, providing students with the opportunity to achieve a recognised qualification within a manageable timeframe. We begin introducing GCSE concepts and scientific terminology from Year 9 where appropriate, helping students develop strong foundations for future study. Students following the Entry Level pathway may also progress to GCSE in Sixth Form when ready.
An Adapted and Accessible Curriculum
Students typically receive 90 minutes of Science teaching each week, supplemented by additional lessons, dedicated practical sessions and focused revision opportunities during the summer term. Our curriculum is carefully planned and adapted to prioritise essential scientific knowledge, concepts and skills, ensuring that key curriculum content and examination requirements are covered. Opportunities to revisit and consolidate learning support long-term understanding and retention.
Small teaching groups, typically with a ratio of 1:3, enable highly personalised support. Practical investigations, regular low-stakes assessments and targeted revision help students develop confidence and make progress at a pace appropriate to their needs. We also make purposeful cross-curricular links, particularly with Geography, where shared topics such as ecosystems, climate and data analysis reinforce understanding and help students recognise the relevance of Science beyond the classroom.
Supporting Progress and Achievement
Our approach recognises that successful learning is not simply about the number of hours spent in the classroom, but about making that time purposeful, accessible and effective.
We have successfully delivered GCSE Science through our adapted model for over six years, with consistently positive outcomes. Over 90% of students have achieved Grade 3 or above, reflecting the success of our personalised approach.
Above all, our aim is to ensure that every student can experience success in Science, developing curiosity, practical skills, scientific understanding and meaningful qualifications that support their future education and aspirations.
