Maths

Please have a look below to see how maths is used to develop the whole child here at The Haven:

Maths at The Haven is tailored to the individual needs of the student. On entry into KS3, students access our KS3a or KS3b pathway dependent on ability, gaps and confidence. KS3 teaching focuses on learning through explorative work, allowing students to discover methods and mathematical rules through collaborative discussion and hands-on activities. This not only breaks down the barriers some students have to math’s through previous negative experiences but allows for true mastery as they gain a depth of understanding of mathematic concepts that leads them into KS4 ready for a step up in subject content.

We provide both Functional Skills and GCSE pathways in KS4, and students’ progress through these pathways at a speed that suits them individually. Teaching focuses on learning skills, and then applying those skills into problem solving exercises. This allows students to be ready to know when and how to apply the knowledge they have not only in exams, but into life beyond school.

A smaller number of students join us at The Haven in a place where they are not ready, either academically or emotionally, to access our KS3 Curriculum. For these students we offer Entry Level qualifications as a bridge to progress through our curriculum pathways, or as preparation for college where they can further continue their math journey.
