Our School

Welcome to our School.

The Haven School is an independent special school for young people who have a statement of special educational needs or an EHCP for social, emotional and mental health difficulties.  This is a small school for 25 fte pupils aged between 11 and 19 who require a therapeutically informed environment in which to access their education.  Our pupils may have attachment difficulties linked to childhood and ongoing trauma, and there may also be a diagnosis of ADHD or ASC. Pupils may present as angry and aggressive or be withdrawn and anxious, and/or have problems developing successful relationships with peers and adults. 
As well as teaching and support staff we employ a clinical psychologist from Camhs to provide support for pupils and parents and training for staff. We realise that pupils cannot make progress in isolation so work with parents, carers and other stakeholders is an integral part of our programme, including the opportunity for these to work alongside the pupil in targeted lessons.

Our timetable provides for flexible learning programmes which prioritise social and emotional development alongside literacy and numeracy within a creative and challenging curriculum. We are a small school and this enables us to truly develop personalised learning programmes for each pupil which are reviewed regularly. Pupils do not necessarily fall neatly into national curriculum year groups for learning opportunities but have their needs assessed and programmes set that identify gaps in learning and skills which are addressed in a systematic way. We aim to transform previous negative school experiences and develop individuals who become socially adept and armed with sufficient academic knowledge and qualifications to move on to either mainstream education or further education or training post 16.  There will be scope for those that need it to remain in school until they are 19.
Our staff are trained and experienced in encouraging positive behaviour for learning within a highly structured learning environment. We encourage an atmosphere of mutual respect where pupils work hard, make progress and achieve their potential as a result of having their individual needs assessed and catered for. Accredited qualifications available include GCSE English, mathematics, science and art, The Princes Trust and a range of BTEC qualifications.

Our school is based within the grounds of a local mainstream high school and has its own self-contained accommodation and entrance. Some lessons take place in specialist accommodation within the mainstream school. Pupils are therefore encouraged to work with Haven staff in the school which gives them exposure to a mainstream experience in a secure, supported way. We also work with the local community doing voluntary work and work experience.
